Ötztaler Radmarathon
At a glance
The Ötztaler Radmarathon is a cycling marathon for amateur riders starting and finishing in Sölden. The loop is 227 kilometres long with 5,500 metres of climbing and crosses four alpine passes: Kühtai at 2,020 metres, the Brenner at 1,370, the Jaufenpass at 2,090 and the Timmelsjoch at 2,474 metres as the high point. The start is at half past six in the morning and the field is capped at 4,000 riders. The fastest take around seven hours and the field as a whole about twelve. It is held on a Sunday in late August, on 30 August in 2026 and 29 August in 2027.
Starting places are drawn by lottery, not sold. Registration runs in January and the draws are in February and again in April. Anyone who gets a place therefore knows by spring that they will need a bed in Sölden in late August, and that is exactly when the good ones are still available. Wait until July and the search takes longer.
Cut-off times apply at seven checkpoints and riders who miss them are taken out of the race. The route counts as very hard, with gradients up to eighteen percent.
For family and supporters the village is the best place to be that day: start and finish are both in Sölden, with twelve hours in between that need not be spent waiting. Haus Kristiania is in the centre, so both are reachable on foot without moving the car.
